Can a country's extreme focus on its own interests contribute to global harmony or does it invariably lead to conflict?

It does lead to conflict because the country is so focused on itself and its growth that it inhibits the growth of others and can lead to large conflicts.

I believe that a country should be working in itsself before it can help anyone else

It doesn't just matter about your own opinion it also matters about the world too. There will be choices where it's good for your country but it's bad for others.
